I’ve seen a good number of dogs who have eaten things they shouldn’t have. It’s not as common for a curious cat to swallow a strange object, but it does happen from time to time. I am always amazed at what kind of things get eaten by our pets!
Today I saw a cat who had been vomiting 2-3 times a day for the last 4 days. He was bright and happy and eating well, but the owner was concerned about him so they brought him in. We took an xray and look what we saw:
It’s not the straightest xray…he was a squirmy cat! But the problem is pretty obvious, even if you are not used to looking at radiographs. What an earth is that circle? I asked my Facebook fans and here is what some of them said:
Soooo….one of you was bang on! I had one of my technicians shoot a video as we did surgery. (Thanks Kim!) Warning…it’s a little graphic. You’re going to see intestines, blood and of course, a mystery object:
Dr. Marie is a veterinarian treating dogs, cats and pocket pets. She runs the veterinary advice site, Ask A Vet Question.
That was so cool. Oh, naughty kitty. Oh, good vet.
Thanks for the video! Interesting that it managed to make it’s way out of the stomach into the duodenum but couldn’t progress further, even with it’s round shape.
My cat swallowed a needle one day. I spotted her under the coffee table chewing on something. When I picked her up she had almost the whole needle gone. After a few days of observation and hesitation after JUST spending over $800 on another one of my cats, I finally took her to the vet when I just couldn’t stop worrying about her. The x-ray showed it had passed through her intestine and was sitting there just waiting to be passed. The vet also did an ultrasound for his own curiosity and free of charge to see if what he was seeing was accurate. After days of picking apart cat poop, I finally gave up. I never did find it, but assume it eventually passed and I somehow missed it or she finally passed it after I gave up looking. Regardless, she’s perfectly fine. We were lucky that time for sure.
That’s awesome! Thanks for posting. It’s amazing what can be done for animals – my eldest cat had a huge kidney stone and some small ones, and the bladder ended up with a small rupture. We were fortunate – my vets did the surgery and washed all those intestines, and had to rehydrate him several times after surgery, but he is still with us (at 16 now! and on a raw diet to help eliminate crystals). I wondered how they would heal the bladder wall’s hole – is it similar to that stuff you put on the intestine?
Wow – Great Vet!! Thanks so much for sharing the video. It was really interesting.
So glad you managed to help this kitty.

Thanks for sharing this info and video! My Lab got the exact same surgery not even a week ago. She got staples though, and she’s recovering very well. She was vomiting for a whole day and suddenly stopped, but she also wasn’t eating and that went on for 6 days until she puked again. Now, she’s done this before and has passed things easily (socks that is), but puking after 6 days meant to me that it was far more serious. Off to the vet we went, the x-rays didn’t show much besides the fact that her intestines were doing loops and were quite literally all over the place, with also a very gassy colon. Day 7 she got the surgery and low and behold, a pair of undies were lodged. I will admit, I hadn’t been walking her as much as I did when this happened. I still don’t know where and how she got a hold of the undies, but safe to say, this Lab will be getting more than enough exercise now!! (when my dog eats something, she’s telling me she needs more exercise)
