Would you buy a cat fur coat?

veterinary news

According to ABC News, a man in Germany has been caught selling coats made of cat fur at a German market. Cat fur coatsApparently, it takes 18 cats to make a coat.  The coats were selling for 500 euros each and were quite “warm and cozy”.

The man has been banned from the market.  Selling dog or cat fur is against German protection laws.  There is no word yet though on whether the man has been charged.

What do you think of this?

Would you ever even consider wearing a cat fur coat?  It seems repulsive to me!

I would not wear a cat fur coat, but I would keep the cat fur of a favorite pet cat as a souvenir like a money bag or this kind of things…

These were both legal and quite popular when I lived in Bulgaria in the mid-1980s. They classed feral cats as wild animals. There were apparently no restrictions on catching and killing them for such uses. At the time I was mildly amused, thinking that, like rabbit fur, it was probably initially quite warm, but would not wear well, so you’d eventually end up with a cat skin coat. Now, I wouldn’t wear one.

I do, however, think whether one would wear one is largely a matter of local culture. In the US, I wouldn’t dream of it. We consider even feral cats as animals to be cared for as pets rather than livestock. In someplace where feral cats are a nuisance, and there’s no culture of colony management via TNR, I would be less disturbed, though my first choice would be to see as many cats as possible moved to appropriate rural locations.
