Iverhart Max Recall

There sure have been a lot of recalls lately!  This time, instead of a pet food recall, this one affects the heartworm medication, Iverhart Max.  The medication was voluntarily recalled because of concerns withthe stability of the main ingredient, Ivermectin.

Why is Iverhart Max being recalled?

Virbac, who makes the product does extensive safety testing.  In a letter sent to veterinarians, Virbac said:

“…routine product testing has determined that the ivermectin (an active ingredient) has failed to meet our required stability specifications. Consequently, some dogs dosed with the identified lot may not be fully protected against heartworm disease.”

What lots are affected?

Only one lot of Iverhart Max is affected.  This is lot #110482 for large dogs weighing 50-100 lbs.  Testing has showed that no other sizes of Iverhart Max are affected.

Is my dog in danger?

If your dog has received this medication, there is no immediate danger.  The medication is not toxic or harmful to the pet.  However, if you live in an area that has mosquitos at this time of the year, then there is a risk that your dog will not be protected against heartworm.

If your dog has been on Iverhart Max, it is best for you to contact your veterinarian to receive directions on what to do.  If you live in a heartworm endemic area, the vet may suggest that you have a blood test done for heartworm about 6 months from now as it takes 6 months to be able to determine if a dog is heartworm positive.  Or, if your dog has only just recently started this medication, the vet may decide to supplement it with another one.
