Wellness Small Breed Adult Food Recall

veterinary news

Wellness Natural Pet Food has announced a recall on their Facebook page.  The recall affects 12 pound bags of Small Breed Adult Health Dry Dog Food with a best by date of Aug 18, 2013.    The reason for the recall is that the batch has a higher than acceptable level of moisture.

I have written about moisture related recalls in the past.  Here are a few:

Bil Jac Recall because of mold

Milkbone Recall

Lafeber Treat Recall

Why is moisture an issue?

If there is too much moisture in a food then the risk is that the food can become mouldy.  Some kinds of mold are not terribly dangerous but may   cause the food to taste a little off.  But, some kinds of mold can produce something called mycotoxins.  Mycotoxins can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea or neurological issues such as tremors or seizures.
